On Monday, Oct. 29th, John Yarmuth, Kentucky's 3rd district representative, spoke at a conference held at Bellarmine.
The conference focused on the importance of raising the political awareness among students. "The idea is not to take a partisan side, but to discuss various questions that are important today in our country" Trish Todd, SGA president, said.
The conference is part of the long-year project that SGA introduced this semester to encourage the Bellarmine community to be more engaged in political matters. "Bellarmine is known as an a-political campus, we want to change that," Todd explains.
The presentation, scheduled to be held in the McGrath art gallery had to be moved into a Cralle Theater
to accommodate the larger than expected crowd. Yarmuth touched on a number of different subjects from education to control of Presidential papers.
Yarmuth reflected positively on his first ten months in Congress, "I have gotten to do a lot of opportunities as a freshman member, I don't think a lot of people have gotten." He also spoke on Article I, an initiative he introduced to remind government and the American people of how the country was established. Yarmuth encouraged the audience to get involved in politics and public office, "I'm telling you it is a real trip."
The majority of the conference was dedicated to a question and answer time. Yarmuth answered questions ranging from the recent tragedy on campus to the legalization of marijuana. While Yarmuth has strong foundations in traditional political subjects, he says that it is about more than that stating, "It is not just about who is going to lower your taxes ten percent or raise them five, it is about the very essence of the society we live in."
