Bellarmine University is working with the city to complete a traffic light project, at the Newburg Rd-Bellarmine entrance by mid-October, to help control the dangerous risk of crossing the busy and congested intersection.
"The poles are already in the ground and the city has been working diligently to get the traffic light up as fast as possible," said Tom Fisher, Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management.
The light has not been visually seen but the workers have been spotted on Newburg Rd.
The chaotic traffic has caused many accidents and damage to the grounds of the Bellarmine campus. Robert Zurkuhlen, Grounds Supervisor, said, "There is at least a car accident, involving two or more cars, twice a year. The numerous cars traveling southbound, run up the grassy area between the creek and Newburg almost every month."
The ruts and the lawn are getting repaired monthly because of the dangerous traffic on Newburg Rd. Drivers try to avoid hitting another car and ruin Bellarmine's beautiful lawn.
The early morning rush hour traffic blocks the intersection and causes many Bellarmine students to have to sit anxiously awaiting their chance to dart across when the opportunities presents it. Sophomore transfer, Forrest Smallwood said, "I have class at the BOB building and I find it risky to try and speed across the racing traffic."
From 8am-10am traffic is jam packed bumper to bumper with many people attempting to make it to work on time. "I leave basketball individuals in the morning and I am rushing to get to class by 9am. I get to the intersection and I am sitting behind other students also trying to cross." He also claimed.
The Narrow two-lane-road has been modified with a turning lane for cars attempting to turn into the BOB building and the Bellarmine campus. This has helped with the flow of traffic on Newburg Rd but has not helped with those exiting the campus or the BOB.
"The intersection is not safe," said senior basketball player Lara Donnelly. "It's difficult to make it to class at the BOB building on time with the traffic. If there is rush hour traffic in the morning or afternoon I am late."
Safety is the main focus for the students, faculty and visitors. I asked Donnelly would the light be helpful and she said, "You won't have to wait for a break in traffic. The light will provide the break in traffic so that you can either cross Newburg Rd or turn onto Newburg Rd."
Fisher said, "The light should be up by then end of September-mid of October." Students will have to be careful and patient at the intersection until the light is up. Having good judgment and patience is the only key to darting across the road successfully.
