Are you wasting hundreds of dollars? The answer could be yes, and you may not even know it. If you have been buying your books from the Bellarmine bookstore you may be losing money.
Sophomore Brittany Roberts learned the hard way freshmen year, "My first semester here I paid over $400 at the bookstore, but then I learned." This past semester Roberts bought her books online using Amazon.com. This is before she knew about the Bellarmine Book exchange.
The Bellarmine book exchange is a free program provided to Bellarmine students by the Student Government Association. It is a website in which students can register their books to sell them to other students within their own network. The website will also let you simply buy books with if you are not interested in selling.
Andrew Bird, a Student Government representative, explained, "This website creates an opportunity for students to buy and sell books to each other within the Bellarmine community. In the end they are really helping each other save money." Bird was in charge of getting the website setup for Bellarmine, and explained that the website is at other Kentucky schools. He contacted Nathan Ford who started the entire program at the University of Kentucky and expanded it to many other schools including: Murray State University, Georgetown College and the University of Louisville. Ford has now expanded to other states like Texas and South Carolina.
The program at Bellarmine is still relatively new and many students do not know about it yet. Jody Ceil, an upperclassman, said he spent $680 on books from the bookstore this year. He said, "It is easy and convenient." Sarah Lockhart disagrees with Ceil and said, "The book store prices are ridiculous." As she shared that she saved over $200 by buying her books online.
The online book change website offers different functions other than simply buying and selling. It can hold your schedule of classes and books. You can also create and watch list. It is very simple to do, just post the ISB number of the book you are looking for and if someone posts that book you will be notified.
The registration processes is very easy and does not take more than a couple minutes. All that is really needed is email and contact information; because once you have found the book you want you have to set up a time to meet the book owner. Caroline Petrik, another Student Government representative, said that over 300 Bellarmine students have already signed up.
Lastly, remember the whole process is completely free to the user. To set up an account or for more information visit www.bookexchange.com.
