Bellarmine hosted 30 teams and nearly 300 participants for this year's Relay for Life. The event, which took place from 6 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 3, through 6 a.m. on Saturday, Apr. 4, raised money for the American Cancer Society, giving participants a chance to fight back against the deadly disease.

Bellarmine's Relay has raised a little over $16,000 so far, but they can continue fundraising until August 31.

Emily Lardner, a junior at Bellarmine and the Event Chair for Relay, said, "I think Relay this year in itself was great, we had a pretty good turnout, close to 300 people, and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. I think that the economic collapse effected the amount of money we raised greatly. We still had some teams that rocked it out and raised a lot of money, but overall, it was hard for most people to get the same donations they have in the past."

Although there was a decline in participant dontations, this year's Relay at Bellarmine had the highest amount of sponsorhip money ever received. Shenanigans Irish Grill in the Highlands, Bryant Heating and Cooling and Gastro East Doctors Office donated $500 each.

Bellarmine's Relay committee will be holding a few more fundraisers in the last few weeks of the semester to help raise more money for their final donation total.

Participants had plenty of activities to keep them occupied all night long including band performances, a volleyball tournament, cornhole, and the fighting ring. Each team had a station set up selling snacks, holding raffles, and other activities to raise money for the cause.

The "BU Financial Aid Family and Friends" team raised the most money, with $830 (as listed on Bellarmine's relay web site). Sophomore Shelly Deacon, a member of the team, said, "Relay was a lot of fun this year. It is always successful in bringing awareness of how cancer affects our community, and bringing different organizations together."

Millions of people across the country participate in Relay for Life each year. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event.

It's really great that students and the community are taking an active role in supporting this great cause. Cancer research is extremely important and researchers need a lot of support and funding in order to make life-saving breakthroughs. (Continued…)
