The Bellarmine Knights hosted the St. Joseph's College Pumas in a pair of doubleheaders this past weekend, gaining a split in each.
Saturday's first game was an offensive explosion as it took the Knights 10 innings to put the Pumas away. Homegrown sophomore Braxton Graven established a new school record by swatting four home runs in the contest, including the walk off smash in the bottom of the tenth for the 11-10 triumph. The effort helped earn Graven Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week honors for April 6-12. Ryan Krull notched his 6th win of the season with two strong innings of relief pitching, giving up only an unearned run on one hit, with two strikeouts.
Game 2 looked as if it would be more of the same as both teams hit the board in the first inning, but St. Joe's starting pitcher Chase Sonen settled down for the complete game 6-3 victory. John Lyons and Patrick Brady each had two hits in the loss for BU.
In Sundays first game, Puma pitching again handcuffed the Bellarmine bats as Shane Zegarac threw six shutout innings before the Knights could touch him for a pair of seventh inning runs. The home team also got a strong performance from starter Graven, who went six innings, giving up three runs and striking out three. Zegarac had 10 K's and got the complete game 4-2 W. Adam Chester and Kyle Roden had two hits apiece for Bellarmine.
The Knights would not be denied in game two, building a 7-0 lead by the fourth inning and cruising to a 9-2 win. BU starting pitcher Derek Mattingly shut the Pumas down with eight solid innings for his fourth win of the year, giving up only one earned run on five hits while striking out 12. Brady was the offensive star, going 3 for 5 with a home run and 4 RBI's, while Chester added three hits and scored twice.
Bellarmine remains in third place in the Eastern Division of the GLVC with a 12-8 conference record, 23-16 overall. St. Joseph's holds fourth place in the conference at 9-7, 23-13 overall.
Oakland City University comes to Knights Field Wednesday April 15 for a 3:00 p.m. single game before the BU squad hits the road again for a weekend series against conference rival Wisconsin-Parkside.
