The Bellarmine Historical Society (BHS) has had a strong start to the school year. BHS was a popular club in the 1990's, but seemed to fall off track somewhere along the way. The new leaders, comprised entirely of juniors under the advisement of history professor Dr. Eric Roorda, have many great activities planned for the upcoming semester.
President McGowan has asked the group to help develop an archive of Bellarmine history. The display may end up as an exhibit in Horrigan Hall after renovations are complete.
"It is also our goal to make Bellarmine's students more aware of their own history and that it can be exciting and interesting. We want to integrate more history based activities into campus activities," said Ally Hoffman, the PR director for BHS.
Ideas for upcoming activities include a Renaissance Fair, a Halloween costume party, and field trips to places such as the Titanic exhibit, the Frazier History museum, and Louisville historical ghost hunters tours. The officers also plan on submitting regular "This Day in History" pieces to the Daily Knight.
"Bellarmine is in a huge transitional period, with Vision 20/20 underway, and we're hoping to be able to capture the history of the university (students, faculty, even architecture) and help make the university greater," said BHS President Ariel Edlin. "We're about incorporating the university as a whole. All events are open and we're all about collaborating because we realize just how important everyone and everything is."
The group started off the year with a showing of the film Braveheart last month. The event had a great turnout, with nearly 50 students in attendance. The group plans to make historical film showings a regular event.
The other officers are Kevin Moore (Vice President), Dave Elsesser (Treasurer), and Chris Glick (Secretary).
"History isn't just something you read in a text book. History is real and living and Bellarmine, guess what, you make it" said Edlin.
