On August 20, I began my first day as an intern at Brown-Forman. The Human Resources lady, Sue, walked me and another new-hire around campus, showing us the different buildings and taking us to get our Brown-Forman IDs made. I didn't even realize that Brown-Forman existed beyond the building in which my interview was held, so I was a little overwhelmed at first.

As we walked around campus, Sue pointed out the different office buildings, the mail center, the guards' office, etc; and then she showed us where we could find the hair dresser, barber, dry cleaning, and gym. Those last four threw me off completely. Was I interning at a business or a self-sustaining village? The other new-hire, Torrence, is a Speed School student who is embarking on a co-op, similar to an internship, except he works full time this semester, and goes back to classes next semester. He was just as surprised at the complexity of B-F's campus as I was.

On that first day of work (and the first day of classes at Bellarmine), I was busy doing HR-related paperwork all day, and ended up being late to my first class of the semester! I raced to Bellarmine, imagining the horrible first impression I was going to make on my professor. Fortunately for me, the professor, David Meyers, was very understanding, and didn't seem to mind at all.

Because of my class schedule, I work Monday - Thursday mornings, about three hours a day, and Fridays 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Every semester since I started at Bellarmine, I have avoided waking up before 10, if I could help it. Now, I am waking up at 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday! I haven't woken up this early since high school, and I don't enjoy it. Lucky for me, I don't have any Friday classes, so I can continue to work my evening job at the movie theater Friday and Sunday nights. Wait… it's lucky to be able to work 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. every Friday? Somehow, I don't think 'lucky' is the right word.

On Friday morning, I put together the news articles for the week and sent them out to all parts of the world. Learning how to work the copier, then proceeding to make 25 copies of a 20 something page document took up the better part of my morning, so I headed off to lunch when I finished. Embarrassed to eat alone, my overactive imagination played out scenarios where I was the only one in the cafeteria eating alone, sticking out like a sore thumb.

To my surprise, once I got to the cafeteria (yes, Brown-Forman has its own cafeteria, as well as a café), I saw a familiar face: Torrence, the co-op student from U of L's Speed School. He was also there alone, so we ate lunch together and talked about our new jobs. As it turns out, Torrence works with Bellarmine's Mock Trial team, so I see him in the Communication wing on Tuesday evenings when I'm hosting my radio show, The Billy Mitchell King of Kong Hour of Song, which airs Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m., hosted by Jess Sparks and myself, only on bellarmineradio.com! What do you mean, that was a shameless plug?

Anyway, next week be sure to look for my article. I'll tell you all about the exciting world of Brown-Forman, at least from my point-of-view.
