At Brown-Forman, the intern in the Corporate Communications department has a lot of varying roles. If somebody in this office, made up of mostly internal communication specialists, needs me to stuff some envelopes, I start stuffing. If somebody needs me over in the Ice House, where the external communication specialists are, i.e. brand managers, are located, I run across Dixie Hwy, avoiding cars that see flashing yellow 'Crosswalk' lights as a personal challenge to double the speed limit.

Let me back up for a minute. Brown-Forman is a "diversified producer of fine quality consumer products." This statement, pulled from Brown-Forman's website, www.brown-forman.com, means that Brown-Forman manages several well known wine and spirits brands, including Jack Daniel's, Woodford Reserve, Old Forester, Early Times, Southern Comfort, Finlandia, Fetzer, Chambord, Little Black Dress, and several other brands.

Whenever I tell my friends this, the first response is usually, "So you can get me some free liquor?" or "Hey, can you get me a Jack Daniel's t-shirt?" If only I could, guys. Unfortunately, I'm still a youngin', aged 20 until January, and even then I don't think I'll be handed free booze just because I'll have reached the legal drinking age.

While I don't get free alcohol, I do get to work with the PR teams that manage the alcohol brands (that counts for something, right?) My second week on the job, I packed boxes full of Woodford Reserve promotional items for journalists coming in to some sort of event. From cookbooks to flasks, I packed very random but interesting items into those boxes. I even got to keep one of the hats, even though I can't wear it until I'm 21.

Once they were packed up, I drove the boxes to the Seelbach Hotel. Sounds boring, but it was kind of cool to park in the no parking area, and stroll up to the valet parking guys and say, "I'm with Brown-Forman, I have some packages for some of your guests." They even helped me unload my car.
