Efforts are being made worldwide and locally to help the victims of the earthquake devastating the nation of Haiti on January 12, 2010. Junior Communication major Leah Hagan notes, "It is great that so many people are able to help, despite their own problems with the poor economy."
All three of the "O'Shea's family" businesses, Louisville's O'Shea's, Flanagan's and Brendan's, together raised $10,000 for the American Red Cross efforts in Haiti. The Louisville-based Humana foundation will also donate $100,000 to relief efforts and match Humana associate contributions up to $50,000.
With all the help from the community, it is hard to let the efforts of our own Bellarmine community go unnoticed. Kayla Theisen, Student Government Association sophomore representative states, "The earthquake in Haiti has left much of the nation in shambles, and killed thousands. We are doing everything we can to help, without physically being there."
Theisen is in charge of the committee that was selling tickets for $1 in Koster's. All of the proceeds from these sales were donated to the Red Cross efforts in Haiti. To provide incentive, each student who purchased a voucher was entered in a drawing for declining balance Flex dollars and a Bellarmine sweatshirt.
Students may have also noticed the "Help Haiti" canvas in the Quad. This was painted by Art student Nate Hendrickson. The sign was the inspiration for a T-shirt that will also be sold by the Student Government Association and designed by Natalie Fischer. The shirts are being sold for $12 in Kosters, Café Ogle and on the The "Help Haiti" T-shirt Facebook page. The total profits from shirt sales will be donated to Partner's in Health, an organization of medically trained professionals that have been helping the nation of Haiti since 1985.
