Bellarmine's Career Center will be hosting an event on campus called Resumania. Resumania will give students the opportunity to receive feedback on their resumes and cover letters directly from employment professionals.
Resumania has several human relations representatives and hiring managers coming from a wide variety of locations. They will meet one-on-one with students participating in Resumania and give general and specific critiques on students' resumes and cover letters. According to Ann Zeman, Director of Career Development and Counseling Career Center, "students have responded very well to getting feedback from their potential employers."
The past two years, the Career Center has hosted monthly career focused resume critiques utilizing the expertise of HR representatives from the community. Last fall Bellarmine decided to try a new event called Resumania. Because of the success of the event, another has been scheduled for this semester. Last fall 27 students participated and met with the 10 HR representatives.
This semester 12 HR representatives have donated their time to helping Bellarmine students. They represent great companies in the Louisville community including, GE, Enterprise Rent-A-car, Jewish and St. Mary's Hospital, Kindred Hospital, Constellation Energy, Northwestern Mutual Insurance, UPS, and several others.
Students can gain vital information regarding their resumes, like what makes a resume of a graduating college senior stand out from their competition. Students participating should feel free to come prepared with questions for the representatives.
Zeman suggested some other questions that students may want to think about include asking if recruiters look at a cover letter or resume first? Students may also find it helpful to ask how much information do recruiters want to see about technical skills. Also questions about the significance of related experience and internships may benefit those trying to improve their resume.
Students receive feedback from the representatives about placement of information and formatting of the resume. Discussion may include rather they should list references or not on the actual resume. Participants also get feedback on how they have described their previous work experiences and leadership experience. Representatives usually recommend action words to describe tasks and explain how to relate what you have done to the future requirements of a career position.
Resumania will be held in Frazier Hall on Thursday, February 4, 2010 from 11am-12pm. The number of student participants is limited. In order to participate students must submit a current copy of their resume along with a list for a specific representative to Ann Zeman at azeman@bellarmine.eduResumania/February 4,2010. A list of HR representatives can be found in the Daily Knight.
