A hobby, a social action, an addiction. There are many ways to refer to smoking, but only one is true for all: a health hazard.
Bellarmine University student health concerns are the cause for a campus-wide tobacco ban. The ban began the first of this year, and still remains in effect.
Although the tobacco ban is student enforced, there are consequences. As of now, the consequences are still being discussed, but the consequence that always remains is poor health.
As part of Bellarmine's Vision 2020, the campus is becoming health conscious. The smoking ban is the beginning of this health enforced community.
The Bellarmine community is currently split between those for the ban and those against it.
"People who have been raised around it and who are addicted to it can't just stop an addiction," stated Bellarmine freshman nursing major, William Obert, who is one of a number of students against the ban.
The ban is going into effect at other universities around the area as well. Bellarmine followed in the footsteps of the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville in promoting a healthier campus.
"Other universities are already doing it," said Bellarmine sophomore exercise science and pre-physical therapy major, Kayla Theisen.
Because the ban is student enforced, students are sometimes put into awkward situations. They are doing their duty as a Bellarmine University student to follow the rules and make the campus a better place, but students do not seem to listen.
"The only problem with the smoking ban is the student enforcement," stated Theisen.
Due to these actions, some students do not listen to their peers and continue breaking the newly enforced ban, unintentionally disrespecting peers.
The tobacco ban will continue to be enforced by students, faculty, and staff, and it will remain in effect as part of Bellarmine's Vision 2020.
It is a student's choice to smoke or use tobacco in any form, but it is that same student's choice to follw the rules and show respect to the community of Bellarmine University.
