The House of the Devil fails to scare

The House of the Devil, the newest release from young director Ti West, is a disappointment for scary movie fans looking for a fast-paced, action-packed film.
The film, set in the 1980s, is relatively uneventful. Nearly an hour in, we still had no idea exactly what was going on or where the movie was headed, and there was only half an hour left.
Centering around a college student who takes a sketchy babysitting job to help pay her rent, the film progresses very slowly. The main plot of the film focuses on the young woman and the family she is called to babysit for, who turn out to be Satanists with no children at all.
The ending finally has some action, but it was toned down much more than what I had expected. The twist ending does help things out, but I would not be interested in a sequel if one was to be released.
The idea for the film is quite interesting and unlike other scary movies I have seen in the past, but it was not executed very well. All of the action happens in the last 5-10 minutes, with the rest of the movie very dull and slow.
The film was released on DVD Feb. 2. For more information, contact Elizabeth Atler at elizabeth.atler@sapkarpr.com
