Bellarmine University is honored to have some of the women that are here on staff. One of these women is Matisa Wilbon Ph. D., better known around campus to her students as Dr. Wilbon. Dr. Wilbon first came to Bellarmine in 2006, when she first served as an adjunct Sociology Professor. She is currently a full-time Assistant Professor in the Sociology Department here at Bellarmine, a role she has served in for 3 years.
A Kentucky native, Dr. Wilbon received her undergraduate at Centre College, a small private college much like Bellarmine in its demographics. Initially, when she entered school, sociology was not in her plans. "It was first semester of my sophomore year and they offered a class on African American Society," said Wilbon. "The course title seemed attractive to me so I took it, and I fell in love with sociology. The next semester I declared it as my major."
After graduating from Centre, Dr. Wilbon continued her studies and received her doctorate at Ohio State University. From there, she came back to Kentucky. She worked for a research firm in Louisville for about a year, researching public policy. But her desire was to teach and her heart was in the classroom. "I have a passion for teaching that goes all the way back to when my brother was 4 years old and I taught him to tie his shoe, and when he was 5 and I taught him to ride a bike," said Wilbon.
After the research firm, Wilbon came to Bellarmine, where she was attracted by the demographics that resembled those of her own undergrad school, Centre. She also is in support of where the University is planning to go with expansion and diversity. "I appreciate the vision and growth model that the University has." Dr. Wilbon also said, "I enjoy the challenge allowed for of bringing diversity."
Not only is Dr. Wilbon an Assistant Professor in the Sociology department, she is also very involved around campus as the Director of the Brown Scholars Leadership Program, on the planning committee for the Women Leadership Conference that Bellarmine has, as well as being on the Black History Month planning committee. She is also doing some personal writing on her own, and working on a drug prevention study.
Off of campus, she is a wife and involved member of her church congregation. How does she balance all that you may ask. Well in response she would say, "I don't find time to balance it all, it really is a challenge. Sometimes things are given higher priority but that's life. But that's also the joy of life, that you can do that." But do believe, Dr. Wilbon gets the job done.
That is why the Bellarmine community is pleased to have Dr. Matisa Wilbon on campus, contributing all that she does.
